Reducing critical cloud vulnerabilities through targeted Azure remediation

The Challenge

A leading financial services organization faced a large and growing backlog of Critical and High vulnerabilities across multiple Azure environments, creating real risk to customers, compliance standing, and operational resilience.

The scale of the backlog was only part of the problem. Remediation required close coordination across cloud enablement, security, and application owner teams, and no single group had clear ownership of every finding. Without defined accountability or a shared method of prioritization, critical issues could sit unresolved while teams waited on one another. The organization needed a structured way to establish ownership, focus effort on the highest-risk findings, and show leadership measurable progress.

The Solution

Highspring embedded cloud security and engineering resources alongside the client’s Cloud Enablement Team to build a repeatable remediation program. The team started by prioritizing Critical and High findings across three Azure tenant to focus on the vulnerabilities that posed the greatest risk. Highspring worked directly with application owners to remediate both infrastructure and application vulnerabilities. To keep work moving across teams, Highspring standardized communications and escalation paths, giving owners a clear view of what needed fixing, deadlines, and actionable steps to take if progress stalled.

Visibility was the next priority. Highspring built Power BI reporting to track vulnerability burndown over time, providing leadership with a clear, data-driven view of risk reduction and remediation progress. Looking beyond tactical patching, the team also identified opportunities in automation, cloud-native architecture, and governance that could keep new vulnerabilities from piling up in the future.

Our Impact

The organization now has baselines and active remediation plans in place across all Azure tenants, as well as a repeatable operating model for owner engagement, escalation, reporting, and tenant onboarding so that remediation no longer depends on ad hoc coordination.

With clear ownership, leadership visibility, and a roadmap toward automation and stronger governance, the organization is positioned to keep reducing risk as its Azure footprint grows. Highspring also delivered key measurable outcomes, including:

  • 61% reduction in High vulnerabilities—from 18,000 to just 7,000
  • 48% reduction in Critical vulnerabilities—from 1,700 to 900
  • Baseline and active remediation plans established across three Azure tenants
